creating real connection virtually

I'm frequently asked, "how can I create meaningful connections with professional contacts I've only met virtually?"

I depend on creating ongoing "micro experiences." A "micro experience" I define as ongoing touch points that add value to the relationship and give the other individual a positive experience of who you are and how you are authentically adding value as a part of their network.

Here's a concrete process:

1. I've identified someone that I would value as a part of my professional network for a meaningful reason.

2. I connect with the individual either by attempting a Linked In invitation or by first engaging with their posts. The answer to this question depends on a nuanced read I make of the individual.

3. Once I've engaged and or connected, I pay attention to the individual's interests and ways that I can add ongoing value to the connection. This could look like a variety of activities ranging from sending an email with an article of relevance to tagging him or her in a post to add to the discussion.

4. At some point, I always initiate a request for a video networking call. The call is important but even more important is after the call you must keep continuous "micro experiences" going after.
